In type 1 diabetes, autoimmune processes cause pancreatic beta-cells to be destroyed. Scientists have learned that in murine models of this disease, inhibiting the expression of GAD prevents diabetes. Based on new evidence, M. Lee and associates at the Salt Lake City university believe somatic gene delivery inhibiting the expression of GAD could prevent autoimmune systems from kicking in, thus preventing human diabetes development.
