Heme Oxygenase-1 Attenuates Intimal Overgrowth After Balloon Angioplasty

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Localized virus-mediated delivery of genes for the enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) modifies vascular remodeling following balloon angioplasty and prevents the likelihood of restenosis, according to researchers at Baylor College School of Medicine.

David A. Tulis and colleagues at the Houston, Texas, medical school have developed an adenoviral construct containing genes for HO-1 (Ad-HO-1) that can attenuate neointimal hyperplasia, an offshoot of neovascularization, in arteries. To date, the new gene therapy has proven effective when administered to rats following balloon angioplasty procedures.
