David A. Tulis and colleagues at the Houston, Texas, medical school have developed an adenoviral construct containing genes for HO-1 (Ad-HO-1) that can attenuate neointimal hyperplasia, an offshoot of neovascularization, in arteries. To date, the new gene therapy has proven effective when administered to rats following balloon angioplasty procedures.
