In one of the latest studies, a team in Italy has used gene therapy to stimulate tissue regeneration in rats. The results of the study highlight the significance of angiogenesis to the overall wound healing process, the researchers say, and the therapies could be particularly valuable for treating patients for whom wound healing is very difficult, such as those with diabetes.
