Recombinant growth factor antagonist could be useful for advanced cancers

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Researchers believe the hepatocyte growth factor blocker NK4 could be used in gene therapy to treat those with advanced gastric cancers.

Members of a multicenter research team have tested recombinant NK4 in vitro and in vivo and found its ability to inhibit gastric cancer cell growth was significant.

"To evaluate the function of endogenous NK4 and investigate its potential inhibitory effect, TMK1 cells were transfected with NK4 plasmid," S. Hirao and colleagues, Nara Medical University, Japan, described in a recent report.
