Antisense treatment suppresses growth of human tumor xenografts in mice

Study results suggest that colony-stimulating factor-1 blockade could be a new approach to treatment of solid tumors.

According to a researchers in Austria, "Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) foster cellular invasion by disrupting extracellular matrix barriers and thereby facilitate tumor development. MMPs are synthesized by both cancer cells and adjacent stromal cells, primarily macrophages. The production of macrophages is regulated by colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1)."

S. Aharinejad and colleagues, University of Vienna, found that "[t]issue CSF-1 expression increased significantly in embryonic and colon cancer xenografts." So the researchers...
