Gene enhancer enables selectivity in thyroid cancers

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - A simple matter of replacing viral enhancers with genes for a human protein could be the key to enhancing the effects of therapeutic gene therapy.

Scientists in Italy at the University of Padova reported the new finding in the of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

"A transcriptionally targeted retroviral vector for gene therapy of thyroid carcinomas was generated replacing the viral enhancer with the enhancer sequence of the human thyroglobulin (TG) gene, yielding a chimeric long-terminal repeat," described Luisa Barzon and colleagues.
