American Heart Association issues top 10 research advances for 2002

New treatments for heart attack and heart failure - an implantable device that paces the heart, and cell transplants - are among the top 10 research advances in heart disease and stroke for 2002, said Robert O. Bonow, MD, president of the American Heart Association.

Other major milestones include the use of robotically assisted cardiac surgery for congenital heart defects and a refined angioplasty technique for stroke.

In addition, a study showed that physicians who follow practice guidelines can make a difference in saving lives.
