First human Phase I clinical trials approved in South Africa

South Africa's Medicines Control Council (MCC) has approved a Phase I clinical trial in humans of an HIV vaccine, Pretoria's BuaNews reported.

"This is the first HIV vaccine trial to be approved in the country and the first in the world to test a subtype C vaccine," wrote Veronica Mohapeloa ("First HIV Vaccine Trials to Begin." BuaNews, June 18, 2003).

The study will evaluate the safety and immune system responses of the AlphaVax replicon Vector (ArV) clade C HIV-1 vaccine (AlphaVax Inc.).
