High-intensity focused ultrasound improves cell transfection

University of Michigan radiologists report positive results from their investigation of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for tumor ablation and for nonthermal gene transfer.

Using diagnostic ultrasound (US) images, Douglas Miller and colleagues applied HIFU at 1.55 MHz to renal carcinoma tumors implanted in the hind leg of BALB/c mice. "One test of transfection was also performed with lithotripter shock waves," they said.
