California physician performs first axial lumbar interbody fusion surgery

Spine surgeon Charles Rosen, MD, one of the founding directors of the Spine Center at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, has performed one of the first minimally invasive spinal surgeries in the U.S. using a new technique to stabilize the lumbar spine called axial lumbar interbody fusion, in conjunction with bone morphogenic protein (BMP).

According to Rosen, "The procedure requires only a tiny incision in the back and can have patients up and walking with little pain within hours of leaving the operating room.
