Investigators in Japan wrote, "the repair of intestinal mucosal injuries is a tightly regulated process involving epithelial restitution, cell proliferation and maturation, and the dedifferentiation of epithelial cells. Deeper injuries also require additional repair mechanisms, including inflammatory processes, angiogenesis, and extracellular-matrix deposition."
