According to recent research from Guangzhou, People's Republic of China, "Background The decreased degradation of extra-cellular matrix proteins plays an important role in the onset of diabetic nephropathy. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), which are members of the matrix metalloproteinase family, are associated with this process."
