Study: Increased IL-9 related to early asthma clinical changes

Genaera Corp. (GENR) announced the publication of a study demonstrating a correlation of increased interleukin-9 (IL-9) expression with early changes that precede asthma, known as bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and bronchial eosinophilia.

BHR is found in virtually all asthmatics and is an exaggerated narrowing of the airways in response to the standardized inhalation of a triggering substance such as histamine or methacholine. Asymptomatic BHR is thought to be genetically mediated and precede the development of asthma.
