Findings from University of Manitoba advance knowledge in Alzheimer disease

According to a study from Winnipeg, Canada, "Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, due to excess amyloid-beta peptide (A beta). TGF-beta 1 and beta-catenin signaling pathways have been separately implicated in modulating A beta-neurotoxicity."

"However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we report that TGF-beta 1 and nuclear Smad7 and beta-catenin levels were markedly upregulated in cortical brain regions of the TgCRND8 mice, a mouse model of familial Alzheimer's disease.
