Risk factors compared between U.S. and Venezuela

University of Texas researchers compared risk factors for cervical cancer among women in Venezuela and the United States.

"We have studied cervical cancer (CC) patients from Venezuela and the U.S. to elucidate the contribution of certain acquired and genetic susceptibility factors to the development of the disease," wrote W.W. Au and colleagues in the journal Toxicology.

They found that in Venezuela, "[f]or acquired susceptibility factors, infection with high risk human papillomavirus (HPV), having multiple sex partners, and having early sexual activities are significant risk factors for CC ... The latter two are not significant risk factors...
