FDG-PET finds unknown metastases in 30% of cholangiocarcinoma patients

Study finds that fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is useful in detecting and staging some types of biliary tract cancers.

"Our goal was to evaluate FDG-PET imaging in staging patients with biliary tract cancers. Fifty consecutive patients who underwent FDG-PET for suspected cholangiocarcinoma (n=36) or gallbladder carcinoma (n=14) were reviewed," investigators in the United States report.
