Children's health plan enrollment lagging

Thousands of Colorado families aren't taking advantage of free health coverage under a program that was restarted July 1 after state budget woes forced a suspension late last year.

As of late-July, just 1,828 applications had been filed since the Children's Health Program Plus enrollment cap was lifted on July 1, said Rhonda Bentz, spokeswoman for the state's Health Care Policy and Financing department.

Some 45,000 Colorado families are in CHP-Plus, but the agency estimates 40,000 more children are eligible. A family of four can earn up to $2,906 a month before taxes, or about $35,000 a year, and still be eligible, even after deducting child-care...
