BestWeek: Conservative Investment Strategy Pays Off for Plans in 2007, Best's Report Finds

Due to financial market turbulence, provider-owned or affiliated managed care companies continued to use a conservative approach in their invested assets portfolios in 2007, according to a new A.M. Best Co. special report featured in BestWeek U.S./Canada.

Of the 87 companies studied, the average investment allocation remained fairly unchanged in 2007, with bonds being the largest investment category at 35%. Most provider-owned or affiliated managed care organizations consistently invested the majority of their bonds in U.S. government securities. The median yield on bond investments was 4.7% in 2007, an increase of 40 basis points from the previous year.
