A.M. Best Report: Insurance Stock Indexes 2008 Market Review: P/C Insurance Index Experienced Depression-Like Drops in 2008

Traditionally, property/casualty and life/health insurance stocks have outperformed the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). However, in 2008 global insurance stocks, measured by A.M. Best Co.’s Global Insurance Composite Stock Index (AMBG), fell 47.2%, while the DJIA dropped 33.8%. • Since 1933, only twice has A.M. Best’s U.S. Property/Casualty Insurance Index (AMBUPC) fallen by more than its 2008 drop of 24.2%. A.M.
