Alcon Reports Rise in First Quarter Earnings on Organic Sales Growth

Alcon, Inc. (NYSE:ACL) reported global sales of $1,493.3 million for the first quarter of 2009, a 4.8 percent increase excluding the impact of foreign exchange fluctuations, or a decrease of 2.8 percent compared to the first quarter of 2008 on a reported basis. Net earnings for the first quarter of 2009 increased 5.3 percent to $452.0 million compared to $429.4 million in the first quarter of 2008. For the same periods, diluted earnings per share increased 5.6 percent to $1.51 from $1.43. Excluding $13.1 million of after-tax costs associated with the company’s previously announced restructuring program, both non-GAAP adjusted net earnings for the first quarter of 2009 increased 8.3 percent...
