A.M. Best Downgrades Issuer Credit Rating of South Dakota State Medical Holding Co., Inc.

A.M. Best Co. has downgraded the issuer credit rating to “bb” from “bb+” and affirmed financial strength rating of B (Fair) of South Dakota State Medical Holding Co., Inc. (d/b/a DakotaCare) (Sioux Falls, SD). The outlook for both ratings has been revised to negative from stable.

The ratings of DakotaCare reflect its decreased capitalization, which resulted from a significant financial loss in the Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plan. The offsetting rating factors include profitable operating results and enrollment growth in its commercial line of business, exit from the Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plan and the company’s strong network throughout South...
