Proposal would force treatment of communicable diseases

A Navajo Nation Council panel has approved a proposal that would allow authorities to force tribal members with communicable diseases or substance abuse problems and the mentally ill to undergo treatment if they won't go themselves.

The measure also would allow a person to petition to have someone committed to a hospital for the same mental and physical conditions.

The council's Ethics and Rules Committee sent the proposal to the full 88-member council to consider during its upcoming fall session.

The measure only requires a majority of the votes cast to be sent to President Joe Shirley Jr. for signature or veto.
