Report states many NIH researchers cleared in ethics probe

U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) investigators have cleared many of the institutes' researchers suspected of secret deals with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

"So far about half of the people ... on the original list were found not to be in violation of regulations," Raynard S. Kington, MD, deputy director of the NIH, said.

A congressional committee had indicated that about 100 NIH scientists had failed to notify the agency about their consulting arrangements and other outside deals, as required.

However, Kington said a review showed that was not the case for many of those in question.
