Older diabetic women have higher risk of UTI and asymptomatic bacteriuria

A recent study found that postmenopausal women with diabetes have a higher risk of urinary tract infection and asymptomatic bacteriuria depending on how long they've had the disease and how severe their case is.

According to E.J. Boyko and colleagues, VA Puget Sound Health Care Systems, "No prospective data exist on the risk of microbiologically confirmed urinary tract infection (UTI) and asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB) in relation to diabetes mellitus and its characteristics."

In their study, they "prospectively (1998-2002) followed 218 diabetic and 799 nondiabetic Washington State women aged 55-75 years for UTI and AB. The baseline examination and...
