U.S. court grants Abbott's request for preliminary injunction against Biaxin XL genericsSHORT

The U.S. District Court in Chicago, Ilinois, has granted Abbott Laboratories' request for a preliminary injunction that will prevent unauthorized generic copies of Abbott's Biaxin XL (clarithromycin) from Ranbaxy and Andrx.

It is expected that a full patent infringement trial will take place in 2006, although no date has been set. Biaxin XL is indicated for respiratory tract infections.

Abbott is a broad-based healthcare company discovering, developing, manufacturing and marketing pharmaceuticals and medical products, including nutritionals, devices and diagnostics.
