New research from the United States and Italy in the area of hypertension detailed

Investigators in the United States and Italy have published new hypertension data. Study 1: Cardiovascular disease mortality is predicted by systolic BP in nonelderly prehypertensives, and by diastolic blood pressure in nonelderly hypertensives; the pattern is reversed for elderly subjects. According to a recent report from the United States, "The ability of diastolic, systolic, mean arterial, and pulse pressures to predict cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality has not been assessed for persons with prehypertension (diastolic pressure 80 to 89 mmHg or systolic pressure 120 to 139 mmHg)."
