Research: Most emergency room visits are not for emergencies

The majority of visits to emergency departments in U.S. hospitals are for treatment of nonemergent cases that could be treated elsewhere, according to an analysis by Solucient, a healthcare demand estimates provider. Of the 106 million annual visits to the emergency department, 58% - nearly 62 million cases - are for treatment of patients who could have been seen in other less-acute care settings, such as fast-track units within an emergency department, free-standing urgent care facilities, and physician private offices.
