Some of the symptoms and disease progression are known for primary biliary cirrhosis, but the cause and cure, other than liver transplant, remain elusive.

According to published research from the United States, "Primary biliary cirrhosis is a chronic cholestatic liver disease of adults. This disorder is characterized histologically by chronic nonsuppurative destruction of interlobular bile ducts leading to advanced fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver failure. The precise etiopathogenesis of primary biliary cirrhosis remains unknown, although dysregulation of the immune system and genetic susceptibility both seem to be important.
