Study identifies three distinct clusters of the disease

According to the current diagnostic criteria of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), fibromyalgia (FM), a common painful condition that affects primarily women, is defined by both a history of chronic widespread pain and the presence of "tender points," excessively sensitive parts on the body.

Among patients, however, there is tremendous variation in symptoms. Some individuals with FM experience a general and pervasive sense of muscle ache, but nothing more specific. Others have symptoms that overlap with chronic fatigue syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome, as well as memory difficulties and mood disturbances.
