Minority children: Over- or under-represented in medical research?

Despite efforts to include them in medical research, minority adults have historically been under-represented. In a new study, however, researchers from the University of Chicago show that African American children are over-represented in research, including clinical trials. White and Hispanic children are under-represented.

Although African Americans have less access to health care in general, "our data suggest that black children do have fair access to the potential benefits of clinical trials," noted the authors, in the October 2003 issue of the journal Pediatrics.
