FDA issues statement on new measures against BSE

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) fully supports the safety policies for handling of beef products announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which build on the principles and procedures that FDA and USDA have developed since 1997. These protective measures will add an additional layer of protection for the American public against bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

To attain these goals, FDA will evaluate the impact of the new policies on the agency's resources, so that it can devise and implement the most effective and efficient enforcement strategies.
