Study finds a 39% reduction in AD in patients taking statin drugs

Patients taking cholesterol-lowering statin drugs had a 39% lower risk of acquiring Alzheimer disease (AD) according to a recent study published in Neuroepidemiology (2004;23:94-8). The study by a team of researchers at the School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama examined the medical records of more than 3300 patients at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center over a 4-year period. The study found a statistically significant reduction in AD risk in statin users.
