Chinese, Southeast Asian officials call for regional fight for bird flu



March 22nd, 2004

Chinese and Southeast Asian officials meeting to form a joint strategy for fighting bird flu called March 2, 2004, for the creation of an Asian epidemic warning network and closer global cooperation.

The health and agriculture officials from China and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) warned against relaxing vigilance even as they expressed confidence the deadly outbreak was contained.

"The disease must be tackled under strong leadership, with political commitment and ... partnership at both national and regional levels," said a joint statement issued after the one-day meeting.
