Drop in the number of stores selling cigarettes to teens

The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) is winning a battle, but isn't yet winning the war in curbing smoking by juveniles, officials confirmed.

Chiyome Fukino, MD, the department's director, called a news conference to announce that a survey based on undercover teens trying to purchase cigarettes this year finds Hawaii among the leaders in the nation in curbing sales to teens.

"This marks an all-time low tobacco sales rate for the state of Hawaii," she said. "We now have one of the lowest, if not the lowest tobacco sales rates to minors in the nation."
