The Global Health Intelligence Network, created in 1998, previously scanned only English language news reports for signs of infectious disease crises. Beginning November 17, 2004, it scours reports in Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish, and both simplified and traditional Chinese.
The US$1.3 million (EUR 1 million) upgrade was funded in part by the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to reducing the threat of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.
