Naltrexone shows promise for treatment of amphetamine dependence

In an early clinical study, treatment with the opioid antagonist naltrexone significantly reduced amphetamine use in addicted patients. In the Nordic Journal of Psychiatry, investigators in Sweden presented the results of an "open-label clinical trial" conducted "to assess the feasibility of naltrexone as a potential pharmacotherapy for amphetamine dependence." A total of "20 amphetamine-dependent patients" were enrolled, according to N. Jayaram-Lindström and coauthors at Karolinska University Hospital.
