Somatostatin regulates amyloid beta peptide metabolism

Endogenous somatostatin prevents the production of a key peptide mediator of Alzheimer disease-related neurodegeneration.

"Expression of somatostatin in the brain declines during aging in various mammals, including apes and humans," neuroscientists in Japan explained. "A prominent decrease in this neuropeptide also represents a pathological characteristic of Alzheimer disease."
