U.S. FDA approves IV therapy for iron deficiency anemia in pre-dialysis patients

Vifor International Ltd. and U.S. partner American Regent/Luitpold Pharmaceuticals announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved intravenously administered Venofer for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in chronic kidney disease patients not undergoing dialysis. According to the National Kidney Foundation, around 20 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the trend is increasing. Approximately 8 million of these patients are in phases III and IV and often require intravenous iron supplements in the treatment of iron deficiency, a common complication of CKD.
