Blood safety can be evaluated by modeling risks of viral transmission

Recent research from Australia has reported that blood safety can be evaluated by modeling the risks of transfusion transmitted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human T lymphotrophic virus (HTLV).

"The risk of transfusion transmitted viral infection is now so low that mathematical modelling is required to estimate the residual risk. The first national viral risk estimates for HBV, HIV and HCV were recently published by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service," wrote C.R. Seed and colleagues, Australian Red Cross Blood Service.
