Chemokines linked to Sydenham's chorea pathogenesis identified

Several chemokines have been identified with possible roles in the development of Sydenham's chorea (SC).

This condition "is thought to result from the action of streptococcus-induced antibodies that cross react with basal ganglia antigens," scientists in Brazil explained. "Much less is known, however, about the involvement of cellular mechanisms in its pathogenesis."

"Since chemokines seem to play a role in several CNS inflammatory disorders," A.L. Teixeira and colleagues at the Federal University of Minas Gerais "sought to investigate the chemokine profile of patients with SC."
