Californians Against Assisted Suicide: Extreme and Divisive Language Amended Out of AB 2747

After three defeats of assisted suicide legislation in just as many years, the pro-assisted suicide group Compassion and Choices (C&C) suffered another setback with their recent offering, AB 2747 (Berg). This bill came before the Senate Health Committee on Wednesday facing overwhelming opposition from a physician organization specializing in end-of-life care as well as from disability rights and civil rights groups. After failing to get enough votes on the first try, the author significantly amended the bill to remove its extreme and divisive proposals. Only then did the bill receive enough votes for passage.
