Neuron synaptic efficacy and plasticity studied, role of ATP clarified

Published in Healthcare Mergers, Acquisitions and Ventures Week, May 28th, 2005

Recent research from Spain has reported on the stabilizing effects of extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) on synaptic efficacy and plasticity in hippocampal pyramidal neurons.

"The role of ATP as a neurotransmitter and extracellular diffusible messenger has recently received considerable attention because of its possible participation in the regulation of synaptic plasticity. However, the possible contribution of extracellular ATP in maintaining and regulating synaptic efficacy during intracellular ATP depletion is understudied," wrote E.D. Martin and colleagues, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC).
