Mechanical implants do poorly in swine, lead to call for limits in humans

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Data from a study comparing mechanical transmyocardial implant (TMI) and transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMR) in swine suggest the former is not yet ready to be tested in human clinical trials, Duke University researchers say.

The Durham, North Carolina, investigators compared the effectiveness of both therapies for stimulating new vessel growth in the damaged hearts of pigs. The results of their investigation provided little data in support of using transmyocardial implant (TMI) devices for restoring cardiac function and blood flow in the hearts of humans with myocardial ischemia.
