Nitric oxide-releasing aspirin has antiatherosclerotic and antioxidant effects

A study conducted in mice with high cholesterol demonstrated the positive therapeutic effects of nitric oxide-releasing aspirin.

Researchers compared the effects of nitric oxide-containing aspirin (NO-aspirin, NCX-4016), regular aspirin, and placebo on atherosclerosis development in hypercholesterolemic low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-receptor-deficient mice.

"Male mice were assigned randomly to receive in a volume of 10 ml/kg either placebo (n=10), 30 mg/kg/day NO-aspirin (n=10), or 18 mg/kg/day of regular aspirin (n=10)," explained C. Napoli and colleagues, University of Naples Federico II, Italy.
