Scientists in the Netherlands conducted a study "to determine the key factors that control timolol electrotransport," and "to investigate the possibility of delivering therapeutic doses of this drug" through iontophoresis.
"The effect of different factors affecting the iontophoretic transport of timolol was investigated," explained D.G. Fatouros and coauthors at the Leiden/Amsterdam Center for Drug Research. "Anodal iontophoretic transport of timolol was measured as a function of its concentration, temperature, pH, and ionic strength."
