Risk of intra-aortic balloon pump-related complications dropping

The risk of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)-related complications is falling steadily for heart surgery patients.

"Our center in 1995 reported 26% of vascular complications" in IABP-treated cardiac surgical patients, surgeons in England noted. "However, during the last decade there have been improvements in IABP technology and insertion techniques."

With this in mind, M.M. Elahi and colleagues at Glenfield General Hospital in Leicester conducted a study "to evaluate the impact of these changes on the incidence of IABP-related complications in cardiac surgery."
