Since 1998, the Stratford Republican has fought multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer. He was expected to live no more than 5 years after his diagnosis.
His doctor told him stem cell therapy had some success at treating the disease. But with few specialists in Connecticut, the procedures happened only a few times a year.
"I said thank you, and got out of there," he said.
