Nucleic acid amplification tests screen out blood donors with West Nile virus in the United States.

According to recent research published in the New England Journal of Medicine, "West Nile virus first appeared in the United States in 1999 and has since spread throughout the contiguous states, resulting in thousands of cases of disease.
