HEV Infection Poses Threat to Pregnant Women in Endemic Areas

Problems associated with hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection are not limited to developing countries, as there are documented cases of disease among travellers from western countries, reported a researcher at a recent conference.

HEV does not, however, pose a threat to the safety of the blood supply, indicated Patrice O. Yarbough, Ph.D., senior scientist, HEV Project Leader, Genelabs Technologies Inc., Redwood City, California. Yarbough addressed participants attending the Hepatitis - Latest Advances in the Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of HBV and HCV meeting April 20-21, 1995, in Washington, D.C.
