U.S. Becomes 41st Country To Approve Hepatitis A Vaccine

The licensing of a hepatitis A vaccine by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February 1995 makes the United States the 41st country in which the vaccine is available.

The inactivated vaccine, manufactured by SmithKline Beecham Biologicals, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is being marketed under the name Havrix. A second vaccine against hepatitis A, made by Merck Sharp and Dohme Research Laboratories of West Point, Pennsylvania, is also under active investigation by the FDA.
